The story told in this book can truly be called “botanical,” for a considerable number of its pages are devoted to the description of various – and quite exotic – plants. However, there are enough reasons to call the story a “detective novel,” “mystical,” or “non-fictional” as well. All of these would be just as true. It is also true that this story unfolds at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries – in Russia, in Southeast Asia, in the Far East, in Syria, Italy, etc.
